Yes there is something else going on. People do not have the extra cash to spend so they look for discount sellers. This is going to cause a chain reaction of many things.Online stores only account for 6% of retail sales

It's just that the mall culture is dying down now that people are moving back into urban areas. Now smaller boutiques like H&M and Akira are popping up with cheap good-looking clothes which is rendering mid-level brands sold in Macy's useless.Online stores only account for 6% of retail sales

All the retail stores are moving towards store credit cards, not just Macy's. The credit card is pure profit for the retailer (just for signing up, not even including late fees and interest), and the concept of "layaway" is dead in 2016.
It's one of the reasons I rarely shop these days, though I do have Amazon and Best Buy cards.

No wander the store clerk was coppin an attitude when I turned down there Nordstrom Credit Card offer.
