#103: MADELYN TAVAREZ – HOW A PART-TIME BOOTCAMP HELPED HER BECOME AN ANDROID ENGINEER

Our guest on the podcast has a remarkable story.

Madelyn Tavarez did a part-time bootcamp, while holding a full-time job.

She taught herself how to code.

And became a software engineer at Pinterest now building products for hundreds of millions of people.

She is also a Dominican Republic-native who grew up in Washington Heights and due to her own drive and curiosity was able to change her circumstance.

Her senior year of college she went from being a bartender to an “eat, pray, love” moment which took her to Italy. Which eventually played a big role in Madelyn deciding to teach herself how to code.

Fast-forward to today, she works as an Android engineer at Pinterest. She also continues to get actively involved in different community projects, including the TECHNOLOchicas among others. If you are interested in trying out Lambda's free 2-week web development course, you can check it out here!

On the real though. Getting a coding gig is one things, there are many, many jobs available, but a lot of the good places that pay a lot have QUALITY coders

Ive seen a fair amount of coders come in and get dropped later down the line due to their skill set. A lot of jobs aren’t in India anymore as they churn coders out by the pound.

Coding is a continual learning progression and boot camps definitely do help, but you can’t just expect 6 figures and to chill after a 30-day course!

Exactly, practice is key.

Right now I'm just doing 30 to 20 minutes everyday and a bootcamp definitely helps with getting your foot in the door especially if time and money are of the essence as is the case for most people.

It's a motivational story to keep me going.:wow:

Breh you have to be quite the dumbass to even think an entry level position is going to pay you six figures in any career field.

You need to learn Python properly. The moral of her story is to pick a career track bu learn how to intertwine coding with it.

The essence of what she's saying is correct ad a coding bootcamp in Python would help tremendously.

There a difference between coding and coding.

I know cuz one of my parents did the former, I do not have enough interest in it to the the latter

shyt. Laws change, tax codes are constantly updated, diseases evolve. Athletes have to work on improving their game or they get cut after few years.

Every field requires continual learning progression. If you are not actively learning something new on a yearly basis, you will eventually get outdated.
