Bail was set at $500,000 Saturday for a man charged with a hate crime and attempted murder for an attack against a 79-year-old woman at a suburban Homewood grocery.
Pol Danilov, 26, of the 18400 block of Harwood Avenue in Homewood, was charged with attempted murder and a hate crime, according to officials.
Prosecutors said the hate crime charge was brought because Danilov admitted he stabbed the victim because she's African-American, and Danilov has a history of animosity against African-Americans.
According to a police statement, the incident happened about 10:20 a.m. Friday, when the Homewood Police Department and the Homewood Fire Department responded to a call at Walt's Food Store at 2345 183rd St. When they arrived, they found the injured 79-year-old woman who'd been stabbed.
Officers immediately took Danilov into custody and located a knife on his person, the statement said. Danilov indicated to investigators that he believed the victim was vulnerable based on age and race, according to police.
The woman was taken to a hospital and is "expected to make a full recovery."
