I honestly don't think we're that much more intelligent or sophisticated than societies hundreds or thousands of years ago. I just think the modern world is more stable than the world has ever been allowing for technology to evolve faster than ever.
Everything from the airplane to quantum physics has been theorized hundreds if not thousands of years ago, but if you don't have a stable society to test and implement those theories, it goes no where.
it all starts with an idea and each generation builds on what was established.
