Be careful, you start listening to music from that era and you will stop listening to hip hop for weeks.

The illest thing about this era was that people were doing covers of recent hits, but they put such a personal touch that it sounded completely different.

listen to the original (Dionne Warwick) version of this song

Older people used to shyt on rap when I was a kid. They were halfway right. The lyricists have talent, but 99% of the "producers" have no talent other than knowing whose original music to steal.

Let’s not go too far. A lot of hip hop producers/pioneers back in the day were really talented. It’s not easy to make a fresh sound using different samples.

People like Diddy are a joke because they simply take 5/10 seconds of a sample, without slightly altering it and put it on A loop.

Then you have producers like Premier, Q-Tip, Clark Kent etc who just defy the art of sampling and producing every time.

I play multiple instruments but I find it much harder to sample multiple songs to make a unique track out of them. You have to have an amazing ear and vision for it, like a painter.

Sampling is a talent, especially those who can chop a song up and make it a new sound.

A lot of old music would have been forgotten without sampling too.
