People was so quick to call it a disaster and a flop.... while quiet when it turns out the movie has legs.

As ‘Birds Of Prey’ Doubles Its Budget, Why An R Rating Was Always A Risk

For those still keeping track as it enters its third weekend of release, Birds of Prey earned another $990,000 on Thursday, dropping 2% from yesterday but 45% from last Wednesday. Cathy Yan and Christina Hodson’s $82 million-budgeted DC Films flick has earned $65 million in 14 days of domestic release, along with (presuming the 41/59 split has held) $160 million worldwide. Yes, hopes and expectations aside, the Margot Robbie-led Suicide Squad sequel will double its budget by the end of this sentence, and there’s still an outside shot that it will triple its budget and thus qualify as a solid little hit.

The over-performances of the Deadpool films, Logan and Joker ($1.071 billion) arguably skewed expectations of what even an R-rated Harley Quinn movie could do, to say nothing of the $745 million gross of Suicide Squad despite miserable reviews. If we view Birds of Prey and its likely over/under $230 million gross (unless it goes bonkers in Japan next month) not as a DC flick or a comic book superhero movie but as an R-rated, female-centric actioner, well, it’s still not a mega-hit but it’s not too bad either. It’ll nearly triple Atomic Blonde ($95 million) and probably gross more than four out of six Resident Evil movies without China.

Delusional, apology accepted Captain Needa.....doubling it's budget is not a victory in the slightest, it is a loss in Hollywood terms. It needed to hit 270-400 million to make a profit, it will limp along to that via streams and licensing to HBO/TNT in 2020/2021, but this is a major loss and can't be spun around. Die Hards said the same thing about Green Lantern and Jonah Hex....WB/DC will recoup with Wonder Woman doing numbers this year....

Conversely, Sonic same budget, hit 200+ milly easy and has pretty good legs so far. That's how its done....

If you want to play time machine, Blade hit 3x his 50 Million Dollar budget without any CMB headliners or Cinematic Universe involvement in 1998. Marketing and Robbie's interference in the production made this lose steam, give us a PG-13 Atomic Blonde with a more sultry and loony HQ, it would be fine.

270 - 400 million to make a profit??? :mjlol:

Might not be a hit but it'll make enough to recoup.

He's bullshytting. The number is between $200M-$230M. He's trying to make it look worse for whatever his agenda is at the moment.

What agenda? I seen the movie, liked it, but it was a bomb...So tell me again how it is an agenda? Solo "made it's budget back" with 92 million in profit after it cost 300 million to make and grossed 392 worldwide.

That isn't enough to greenlight a sequel. Black Widow will probably do 600-750 Million....

Was the total cost of Birds of Prey? I see that 80 Million number that was floated out there but that I don't believe that included marketing and other miscellaneous expenses.

Those numbers aren't being put up, but 85-90 is the base cost, throw in marketing, easily 120 mill as the total cost of the film.

WB exec - "good news everyone, our DC property in the most popular genre currently on Earth, starring the most popular character from our $750m hit film Suicide Squad might 'qualify as a solid little hit.' Bust out the cigars!!!"
