NEW YORK -- Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira will have season-ending surgery on his right wrist.

More Mark Teixeira Coverage

Are Mark Teixeira's days as a a good player over? David Schoenfield takes a closer look. Blog

The Yankees said Wednesday the All-Star had an MRI with dye contrast and that team physician Dr. Christopher Ahmad determined the torn tendon sheath had not adequately healed. New York said hand specialists Drs. Melvin Rosenwasser of New York-Presbyterian Hospital, Michelle Carlson of the Hospital for Special Surgery and Keith Raskin of the New York University School of Medicine school concurred in the diagnosis.

Recovery time for the surgery is projected at six months.

Teixeira was hurt while hitting off a tee March 5, when he was with the U.S. team at the World Baseball Classic. He made his season debut May 31, then came out of a game June 15 because of inflammation. He went back on the disabled list and did not respond to a cortisone shot.

Toronto outfielder Jose Bautista, limited to four at-bats after July 16 last year because of a similar injury, had surgery last Sept. 4 and was ready for spring training.

No Mas Teixeira

The Yankees will sorely miss Mark Teixeira, who ranked in the top 10 in the majors in runs, home runs and RBIs over the past four seasons. This season, New York first basemen rank among the bottom 10 in offensive production.

A two-time All-Star, Teixeira was batting just .151 with three homers and 12 RBIs in 53 at-bats. He is among five regulars who have missed a substantial part of the Yankees' season.

Derek Jeter, who turned 39 Wednesday, hasn't played with the team since breaking his left ankle Oct. 13 in the ALCS opener. He reinjured the ankle in April during rehabilitation.

Third baseman Alex Rodriguez had left hip surgery on Jan. 16 and the Yankees say they expect both A-Rod and Jeter to return sometime after the All-Star break.

Outfielder Curtis Granderson missed the first 38 games this season with a broken right forearm, an injury sustained when hit by pitch from Toronto's J.A. Happ in his first at-bat at spring training on Feb. 25. Granderson returned May 14 and was in his eighth game back when he broke the knuckle on his left pinkie when hit by a pitch from Tampa Bay's Cesar Ramos on May 24.

Catcher Francisco Cervelli broke his right hand April 26 when hit by a foul tip off the bat of Toronto's Rajai Davis.

$23,125,000 for .151 with three homers and 12 RBIs

@tremonthustler and I were telling Tex from the jump.

Homie should have listened.

Overbay actually gets RBI when we need them.

SINY!!
No player in baseball should get anything more then 5-6 years max. When LaRussa retired, he stated that no one deserved more then 5 years, even Albert Pujols.

All these pitchers earning 20+ mill a season over 6-8 seasons....we'll see how that works out for you towards the ends of those deals.

I don't know if its the fact that I'm more conscious of it, but it seems this has accelerated in recent years. nikkas used to last a long time, nowadays dudes burst on the scene and then and become :flabbynsick: in the blink of an eye

PEDs + getting complacent = :flabbynsick:

I think there are more offenders then we will ever know in regards to PED use. Players arent stupid. They have access to medical professionals, chemists, etc....no matter what kind of testing MLB, NFL, etc institutes they will always be one step ahead, even if its not for long

i'm in the minority.. but tex will always be good with me because of 09. that line drive hr down the line against the twins to win it :blessed:

he's fallen off.. but he's still better than lyle overbay. i like overbay but he is not close to the player tex is.. especially tex's 2 strengths, power hitting and his defense. and as i'm writing this, overbay launches one into the bullpen. my point still stands.

and i think everyone in baseball is aware that these contracts are retarded long. but it's going to take some time for contract lengths to shorten. they got longer with the help of peds and players playing through their late 30s.. but now that that's not happening anymore, it's only natural that contract lengths go to being 5-6 years with probably a higher per year amount.

One of the lone exceptions, but you never know how good he will be near the end of that deal. Same thing with guys like Prince Fielder, CC, Pujols (he already looks done), etc...

No one wants to end up getting little value like the Mutts did when they gave Johan that contract.
