It turns out that Marvels The Avengers were more powerful than everyone thought. Not only did it break expectations, but it actually made more money over this past weekend than what analysts initially reported on Sunday afternoon.
It is now being reported that the Joss Whedon-directed film made $207.4 million in just three days since its release early Friday in the U.S. It played on 4,349 screens, most of those in 3D, averaging $47,698 per screen.
Initial estimates released on Sunday afternoon showed that the film made $200.3 million, which was still far better than the $160 million opening many expected. Plus, no matter what the final number turned out to be, The Avengers still broke the $169.2 million mark that Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 set on its opening weekend last year.
According to Entertainment Weekly, final numbers also show that The Avengers became the first movie ever to cross $150 million in just two days and $200 million in just three.
Even the start of the week didnt slow down The Avengers. On Monday, it added $18.9 million to its domestic total.
Add in foreign box office numbers and The Avengers success is even more staggering. The Hollywood Reporter reports that it has reached $475.8 million overseas, thanks to early release dates in several markets. In just 13 days of release worldwide, The Avengers has made $700 million.
