Which rappers/RnB singers own their masters and make good money from royalties?

If R kelly owns his Masters he must cake off of royalties yearly.

Publishing and Mastersnare two different things

As far as publishing I know for sure Jay, Nas, R.Kelly, Common, Beyoncé, Michael Jackson, Prince, Lupe, Luda, and more own their own publishing. Ownership Of publishing was actually pretty much a standard until they introduced 360 deals.


As far as Masters that’s a different bag entirely. Only a handful of artists own their masters.

Ray Charles owned his. Prince famously and bitterly fought Warner over his.

Michael fell out with Sony over his

Jay-Z owns his, J.Cole apparently owns his as does Rihanna. It was reported that one of the reasons Nas’s Mass Appeal records is being distributed through Sony is because he’s negotiating to own his Masters from Illmatic to Streets Disciple. I believe George Clinton owns the Parliament/Funkadelic Masters.

They’re different.

Publishing is the songwriter credits (lyrics and music/melody)

Masters are the actual tracks we consume. Labels usually own those since they usually pay for the recording sessions.
