I’m not an MLB fan.
Can someone who is explain this to me?
Is this player super good but then got traded but still had guaranteed money?
Is this common in baseball?
Why are the Mets paying so much more (2x more than Nationals and Blue Jays)?
in MLB you can negotiate deferred payments at a later date as a player.
Scherzer signed a huge contract with the nationals a decade ago, they agreed to pay him in deferred payments for a few more years to the tune of 15 million
Teams can negotiate how much salary they want to pay of a player they traded. the mets signed max scherzer to a big contract 3 years ago and traded him in exchange for a few prospects and the compensation to the other team was them paying a small portion of max's contract while obtaining max. it's not that common for a team to eat a large sum of money when trading a player AWAY, but the mets have the richest owner in baseball...so they paid him to go away essentially
the mets dont pay him any money this year, that graphic is inaccurate
the blue jays is a new contract that was for this one season.
max scherzer is a first ballot hall of fame player. a former GREAT player, but he's in his early 40s and injury prone.
