Key Points
Question What are the rates of acceptance and matriculation into doctor of medicine (MD) programs before and after the 2023 US Supreme Court decision on affirmative action?
Findings In this cross-sectional study of 291 764 applicants to MD programs, there was a significant decrease in acceptance rates for applicants from race and ethnicity groups who are underrepresented in medicine (URiM) in 2024 relative to 2019 to 2023, with an associated decline of 503 URiM matriculants to MD programs.
Meaning This study found that the percentage of URiM matriculants to MD programs declined after the 2023 Supreme Court ruling.
