“It started in a mop closet,” Dr. Hodges explained during a panel at the 2022 Essence Festival of Culture. “Terrence and I were talking. I was like “Man we keep getting kids who want to emulate us” and I responded:

So they did. They obtained kids from four different states and began showcasing their “Vet For a Day” Program nationwide, achieving 200 attendees. Both doctors mentioned by the end of the year, with the kids that are enrolled, we should be seeing close to 600.

From successfully giving birth to puppies to working with poisonous African bush snakes, every single day is a different adventure for these vets. Located at the Critter Fixer Veterinary Hospital located in Bonaire, Georgia, Dr. Ferguson is astonished by the evolution of pets they’ve witnessed in each families home over the years. Families are obtaining far more than cats and dogs.

Dr. Hodge dives into detail, stating there cannot be a particular focus on a species of animal for those interested in the veterinary space.

He proceeds to mention his past history as a obstetrician, doing ophthalmology with the eyes, orthopedics with bone surgery, internal medicine and event ultrasounds and radiology. Involving himself in these various specialities helps his knowledge with understanding the inside of the animal.

Today, they want to encourage as many black men to become vets, and hope to be the representation they wish they would’ve had at an early age.
