EPMD earned their status by doing shows and producing music that was appreciated by the core hip hop audience.

Song was aimed at rap artists that blew up off MTV airplay and white fans, bypassing the stamp from the core audience.

Not sure it's tied to criticism about endorsements because I think rappers were in Cross Colours and Karl Kani ads back then.
