Disgruntled? Annoyed? Need to express a funny thought? With the popularity of social media, there’s a meme for that! In a never-ending way to express yourself and with apps that will generate a feed-stopping image that will drive your point home, memes have made certain faces recognizable by the majority.
We’ve all seen them, from the “success kid” to the “metal stoner,” these have become faces we know. Although they’ve become a quick way to make an often lame joke, memes are people too. It sounds funny, but memes ARE people. Have you ever wondered about the background info on some of your favorite meme faces?
Thanks to TheFW, we have the inside scoop on some of those made famous for social media laughs.
1. The Success Kid

The Success Kid was 11-months-old Sammy. His mother, Laney Griner, shared the photo on her Flickr account. From there, the image took on a life of its own, becoming a viral sensation that is still popular today. As a matter of fact, one stroll through any social media outlet you may use today will probably have you seeing this chubby little face at least once. The photos ended up sold by Laney to be used in a Vitamin Water ad compaign.
2. Bad Luck Brian

We’ve all had that one school picture — For “Bad Luck Brian,” it was his junior picture that a friend found so laughable, he turned it into a meme. According to TheFW, Brian now lives in the Akron area and is trying his hand at making funny YouTube videos. He also has a Facebook page where he shares pictures of bad things happening to him.
3. The Hip Barista

The hip barista’s photo was first uploaded to Quickmeme a couple of years ago. “The man behind the meme is Dustin Mattson, and he is not impressed. According to his Twitter, he’s still living down South and teaching people how to make awesome coffee.” ~TheFW
4. The Overly Attached Girlfriend

Another one of the most recognizable faces due to social media, Laina Morris fell into stardom when a video she posted of a rather creepy version of Justin Bieber’s song ‘Girlfriend’ went viral. From the video came a screengrab, which turned into the meme she’s known for. Laina is hardly the creepy girlfriend the meme has made her out to be. She continues to make funny YouTube videos for her many fans, while also raising money for charity.
5. Ermahgerd! Girl

Displaying an expression that will make anyone chuckle, a photo of an enthusiastic ‘Goosebumps’ fan went viral on Reddit in March of 2012. While there have been more than one claim as to who the “Ermahgerd! Girl” is today, the photo on the right of a girl named Maggie, clutching a Maui book is supposedly the genuine article. Maggie is rumored to be a pretty tough football player. Not much else is known about her, other than she also likes to travel.
6. Scumbag Steve

Scumbag Steve is the result of Blake Boston’s high school MySpace picture, which goes to show, parents are right when they warn you about what you upload on social media. It is unknown who nabbed his photo and deemed it meme worthy, but it has made its way around the web. Recently, Blake was making rap videos and posting them on YouTube.
7. The Preppy College Freshman

This may be the most accurate meme portrayal, as Griffin Kiritsy was a college freshman when he had the photo, which became his claim to Internet fame, taken. Supposedly, he didn’t even want to have the picture taken — and now, he’ll never be able to forget it! Reportedly, the photo didn’t hinder Kiritsy’s college endeavors, as he is now a college graduate who lives in New Hampshire and likes sports and country music.
8. Good Guy Greg

Getting his start on *****, “Good Guy Greg” quickly became the poster child for a model citizen according to the ideals of Reddit. He supposedly was a commercial fisherman for a little while, all though that is still under dispute.
9. Successful Black Man

Not only a success on the Internet, “The Successful Black Man” is also a success in his real life. Allegedly, the left photo, which became the basis for the meme, is from a modelling. According to the internet, he has a degree in electrical engineering, a wife, and a job at General Electric in Texas.
10. Suburban Mom & Housewife

“The Suburban Mom & Housewife” is actually romance novelist Carly Phillips!
And finally, our “Where are they now” group:

While there are a few more famous meme faces that we were able to find alleged “now” photos to pair with their memorialized meme images, background information was not found, leaving us to wonder, “Where are they now?”

I was tempting to try and make a meme out of some fellow coli posters after seeing their pics in the last picture thread. :jawalrus:

I decided not to do it, becuz that's one of my fears. I don't want to be the face of some meme that lives on forever. :mjcry:
