It becomes a problem when one party is not emotionally mature enough to handle a situation where they develop feelings, or they wan't something more than friendship but don't know how to go about it, so the whole situation turns into a lie.

You've got to be really emotionally/mentally stunted if you can't truly have a friendship with a female. We're all human beings. If you're that brainwashed by social constructs then thats your problem. But to answer OP's question, YES you can definitely be friends with the opposite sex. I have two friends who are black and female, and I consider them friends.
