YUBA CITY, Calif. -- One of three men arrested following a suspected marijuana theft is a deputy US Marshal.

Clorenzo Mack Griffin, 37, works out of the US Marshal's Service office in Miami and has been a deputy marshal since April 2010, said Drew Wade, a spokesman for the US Marshal's Service in Washington.

According to the California Highway Patrol, Griffin and two other men were in a Jeep that ran a red light around the corner from the CHP's Yuba City office on Saturday afternoon.

Following a short chase, the three occupants abandoned the vehicle near the Sutter County Jail and fled on foot.

A Sutter County sheriff's deputy saw one of the men, identified as Griffin, run into a secure area of the jail property and draw a handgun from his waistband.

The CHP says the deputy fired at Griffin, who wasn't hit, and was taken into custody along with the other two suspects without further incident.

Investigators found a large amount of marijuana in the Jeep and said their subsequent investigation determined the pot had been stolen at gunpoint from an individual in Yuba City.

Arrested with Griffin were Andre Jamison, 39, and Rodney Rackley, 24. All three men are from the Miami area.

A complaint filed in US District Court in Sacramento Wednesday said all three men were wearing police gear during the drug robbery, which occurred at a Best Western Inn off Highway 99.

The complaint says 24 pounds of processed marijuana was taken in the robbery.

Griffin was a standout defensive back for the University of Minnesota whose last football appearance was a 2000 bowl game played just a few miles from the Ft. Lauderdale neighborhood where he grew up, according to an article at the time in the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

The story said drugs had taken the lives of Griffin's mother and older brother, and his dream was to counsel kids to help them avoid a similar fate.

US Marshal's spokesman Wade said Griffin has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the criminal proceedings.

"This doesn't reflect the core values of the Marshal's Service," Wade said.

Miami deputy U.S. marshal busted in California pot robbery
By Jay Weaver
An off-duty deputy U.S. marshal from Miami has been arrested on charges of participating in the armed robbery of a car loaded with marijuana in California, according to a federal complaint.

Clorenzo Mack Griffin, 37, a four-year veteran, was arrested Saturday with two other Miami-area men after the drug ripoff outside a motel in Yuba City.

The three men were wearing police gear when they were caught after their Jeep ran a red light around the corner from the California Highway Patrol's Yuba City office. The vehicle was carrying 24 pounds of marijuana.

A Sutter County sheriff's deputy saw a man later identified as Griffin run and then draw a handgun from his waistband, according to the complaint filed Wednesday by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration in Sacramento federal court.

The deputy fired at Griffin, who was not hit. He was taken into custody with the other two suspects, Andre Jamison, 39, and Rodney Rackley, 24.

Griffin is on administrative leave with pay, according to U.S. Marshals Service spokesman Barry Golden.

Griffin, who grew up in the Fort Lauderdale area, was a standout defensive back for the University of Minnesota football team.

You can't move serious weight without a corrupt law official on your side. He just forgot he didn't have the complexion for the protection.

Cacs leave you no choice but to live righteously
