I personally love his voice during the disco/soul era. His voice had changed, developed the tone that we all grew up on and he was so SOULFUL during that that era.
Dude already had that unbridled pure emotion in his voice between 6-12 years old and then as he got older and his voice changed, he learned how to master his new voice and it took on a totally different feel.
I wish he hadn't moved from that sound (the soul in his voice) but I get it. There was only so big he could get with that sound and he wanted to be the King, the biggest star in the world, and so he had to develop a new sound that would help him get there, a sound that would attract everyone, not just us.
