Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' Has Now Been Certified 33-Times Platinum

Michael Jackson might be gone, but interest in the music he made during his lifetime seems to only increase as time passes.

Ahead of its monthly roundup of newly-minted certifications, the RIAA (the Recording Industry Association of America) has awarded Michael Jackson’s Thriller yet another plaque, as the history-making title has now been certified 33-times platinum in the United States for sales of at least 33 million copies, according to Billboard. That incredible figure sets the bar even higher than Jackson already had it, and it makes Thriller the album with the greatest number of certifications ever.

A few years ago, the RIAA updated its certifying methodology to including sales of singles and streams when declaring albums gold, platinum and multiplatinum. Since then, Thriller’s equivalent sales, and certifications, have only continued to climb, as people across the country have not stopped buying the album, the many singles it spun off, or streaming it on a number of platforms. Back in 2015, Thriller passed the competition to become the first album in history to hit 30 million in sales, and it was quickly certified 30-times platinum. Just last year the highly-successful release was certified 32-times platinum.

For a number of years, The Eagles’ Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975 was the bestselling title in American history, but that changed after Jackson died suddenly in 2009. Ever since then, Jackson’s most popular album has far outpaced the continued popularity of even The Eagles’ bestseller. Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975 now stands at 29 million copies shifted, and it is moving units at a much slower pace than Thriller these days.

From the moment it was released, Thriller was an almost unbelievable success in every way, and it went on to rule the Billboard 200 for 37 nonconsecutive frames. Released in 1983, the powerful record, which mixed R&B, pop and even rock, ended up being the bestselling album of both 1983 and 1984, a feat that wouldn’t be matched again until Adele’s 21 ruled the charts in 2011 and 2012 as the year-end bestseller.

Seven of the album's nine songs were released and promoted as singles, and in time, all of them hit the top 10, which was a first on the Hot 100. “The Girl Is Mine,” “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin,” “Human Nature,” “P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)” and the title track all placed somewhere within the top 10, while both “Beat It” and “Billie Jean” made it to the top of the charts, and all of those songs have gone on to remain favorites for decades. The album would win Jackson seven of his 13 career Grammys, including Album of the Year, and it remains one of the most important pieces of pop music created to this day.

Yet Billboard.com Listed "Thriller" behind Adele's "21" as the biggest album of all time. Nothing in the history of the music is bigger than "Thriller".

And that's JUST AMERICA

"Thriller" sold over 100 Million Copies worldwide, 33 is just domestic and nobody has sold that much in history. It's the biggest album of all time. As you said. The numbers are incredible. My N!gga Mike went 3x Diamond US and 10x Diamond Globally.

"Thriller" had 9 songs and released 7 singles. All singles charted inside the Top 10 including 2 #1's. It spent 37 Weeks at #1. It's the first album to sell over a million copies in one week. It won a record 8 Grammy Awards in 1984. He's probably the most marketable artist in the history of music. Sing, Dance, Been in the spotlight before he was ten, he literally could do it all. His overall transition to adult star from child star was flawless. He's the GOAT.

"21" had nowhere near the impact that Thriller had. Neither did the Sound of Music Soundtrack

Even in sales, impact and success. Billboard is suppose to judge strictly on numbers. "21" did not put up "Thriller" numbers period, nor did "The Sound of Music". "21" sold 33 Million worldwide and went Diamond. Yes that's impressive for the digital era. But it was a success in the same way Celine Dion or Shania Twain they were going Diamond with ease. Shania got 3 Diamond albums. Celine got 2. Sh!t Whitney got 2 Diamond albums. "Bodyguard" was way bigger than "21", please. I think Janet got a couple as well as Mariah. So Adele ain't really doing anything that hasn't been done before. "Thriller" changed the game as far as music videos and just impact. Everyone wanted to immulate and be Michael.

Literally this album is the reason Black Music got to air eventually on MTV and other mainstream stations. So it has a racial social impact as well. Nobody was trying to be Adele after "21". Billboard is trying to rewrite history with that list. Nothing on this planet was or will be bigger than "Thriller". I remember every Halloween in the 80's, houses in neighborhoods all across America, Playing Thriller as kids go and get candy. The cultural impact was astronomical. I think Michael was doing stuff with E.T. too at that time so globally it he was the biggest star in the world. Adele was not the biggest star after she released her album. Again, I'm not saying it wasn't Classic or successful. But it wasn't "Thriller" in any shape or form.
