A Hilary presidency would have meant on social and culture war issues those people potentially getting left behind and risking Supreme court changes that would be effective for the next 20 years.

Also Trump was partnered with him because his not really religious, so Pence is his religious touchstone. In any case Pence is a very scary dude.
