The millionaire, 58, was scheduled to be sentenced today over a ten-year campaign of abuse against Jane Clarke, 46.
He is said to be stable after blade yobs pounced in a car park in Cumbernauld on Wednesday.
A source last night claimed Donaldson, nicknamed ‘Donuts’, was deliberately targeted.
They said: “He has enemies and he’s obviously annoyed someone. They’ve decided to strike out at him.
“This was done in the middle of a residential area and the mob who attacked him didn’t care who was watching them.
“He was hit more than once — it looks like they were out to do him some real damage.”
Cops launched a probe after Donaldson was stabbed in the town’s Torbrex Road at around 8.30pm on Wednesday.
Officers do not know how many attackers were involved before they raced off in a getaway motor.
Appealing for witnesses, Det Sgt Iain Sneddon said: “The man was getting out of his car when he was attacked and seriously assaulted by a number of people.
“We believe that he was specifically targeted.
“It was carried out in a residential area with no regard for anyone who lives or who was there at the time.
“We do not have a description of the attackers, or indeed how many of them there were, however we understand that a saloon-type car may have been used by them.
“This car would have been driven off at speed and, as the roads around the estate are tight, I have no doubt that someone will have noticed it making off.”
Last month, the millionaire tyc00n admitted punching Jane and beating her with a metal dumbbell and telly remote.
Glasgow Sheriff Court heard he also choked her with a wet towel and straddled her before striking her with a key.
He only stopped when a child who saw the attack beat him with a lamp.
Donaldson, of the city’s Possilpark, was bailed for reports ahead of sentencing by Sheriff Joan Kerr today.
The source added: “He is terrified of going to jail.”
Last year Donaldson — who got his Donuts nickname from hanging around a doughnut stall in Glasgow’s east end — settled a £1million nursery cash row with Jane out of court.
