Why are these fans so obsessed with being unique snowflakes?

It's just a chart showing the progression metal has made through the years, same type of list could be made for nearly every other genre of music :yeshrug:

And if it all just sounds like "rock'n'roll" to you you're probably not a fan of this music to begin with

Word. All you have to do is youtube a couple of those artists and see how different they are. There is a HUGE gulf between bands like Dream Theater, Poison, and Limp Bizkit.

Really, the title of the thread is a misnomer. It's more of a genealogy of Metal than a listing of subgenres.

Because really, Grunge, Smashing Pumpkins, Grindcore (at least, I always considered Grindcore and its derivatives too hard and muddled to be called Metal, but that's just me) and the Punk list really aren't Metal at all in my eyes.

But it's still a cool graphic.

grunge and early metal have the best bands according to that list

Saying something is the "Best" is subjective though, aside from Black Sabbath none of those bands are considered metal.. I am partial to the NWOAMH, Grindcore, and Thrash metal lists though :obama:

how is cream metal? they were a straight up blues rock band. they were HEAVILY influenced by the blues, some of those songs on disrael gears literally have the EXACT same riffs from early blues songs from way back in the day.

Like I wrote above, if you take it less as a map of Metal Genres and more as a genealogy of Metal (which would include not just Metal genres, but what influenced those genres as well, thus bands like Cream, Nirvana, The Stooges and Minor Threat), then it becomes less annoying to look at.

There's actually a lot more sub-genres. They are forgetting about the whole Doom-Metal sub-genre, which in itself also has sub-sub-genres (death doom, funeral doom, etc.)

Also Grindcore is a metal genre :beli:

Also, black metal can be broken down into multiple sub-genres as well (sucidal/depressive bm, atmospheric bm, satanic bm, etc).

Same with Death (technical DM, progressive DM, old-school DM)

Same with Thrash (NWOBHM, BWOAHM, etc).

In all honesty, that list is not really that representative at all.

Metal is just so diverse and there really is a need for all of these different sub-genres. However, if all one does is listen to "pop" metal, the sub-genres will not make any sense

SOAD is/was nu metal as fukk. Nu metal started in LA and combined the influence of gangsta rap and bands like sabbath. groove oriented metal, rapping or not was irrelevant.
