Minneapolis public school officials are making dramatic changes to their suspension policy by requiring the superintendent’s office to sign off before students of color can be sent home.

The change comes amid intensifying scrutiny of the way Minneapolis public schools treat minority students and in the wake of new data showing black students are 10 times more likely to be sent home than white students.

Superintendent Bernadeia Johnson said she wants to “disrupt that in any way that I can.”

“The only way I can think of doing that is to take those suspensions back to the individuals and try and probe and ask questions,” Johnson said Friday.

The new policy will be implemented as the district approves a settlement with the U.S. Department of Education, which was investigating the district over its inconsistent suspension treatment for black students.

Far too often school officials are suspending students of color for a behavior that doesn’t lead to suspensions for white students, Johnson said.

Beginning Monday, every proposed suspension of black, Hispanic or American Indian students that does not involve violent behavior will first be reviewed by Johnson or someone on her leadership team.

Does that really work?

And minority kids so different that this is actually needed? Or is it a symptom of a predominately white system being a predominantly white system?

I was suspended mad times from school by white teachers and hardly any from black teachers...

it's not about minority kids being different, it's about teachers catering to white students (sometimes unknowingly)

kids learn best when learning is relevant..if all you're doing is reading about white people, white heros, white knights etc..black and brown are bad...

culturally responsive instruction just makes learning relevant for minority students and cultural sensitivity training is the means to do so for those out the loop.

it won't matter for a racist teacher, but could be an eye opener for those who are unknowingly ignorant.

long story short it works and it is a symptom of a predominately white system being a predominantly white system

So they have to have all that to treat the minority kids like white kids :snoop:

No wonder why I can spot a cac teacher just by them greeting me, trying to be extra nice as a cover for all those suspensions :mjcry:

i went through a similar program to Teach for America

it was white people in there saying they've never been around black people

and Teach for America only places teachers in disadvantaged schools in major cities

you can't teach someone effectively if you don't know their cultural cues

today for example I could've gotten two students in trouble/suspended for plotting to jump another girl in the bathroom

i din't tell the dean or administration...i talked to the two "jumpers" and told them that jumping somebody was a sign of weakness, if you can't handle them on your own then you shouldn't try and fight them

one of them is pregnant! I said how you gonna do that to your seed. if you don't care about yourself at least give your unborn child a chance.

i'm going on a tangent, but the white supremacy you're taught in schools is disgusting

native americans are always naked, dirty, and seen as savages. when in reality it was the europeans who had horrible hygiene practices. how could native americans be naked in the winter but the europeans have on furs??

thats beats down a kid's psyche..you become uninterested in school. once you become uninterested behavior becomes an issue. you're not able to connect the dots as to why you need to be educated. there are limited examples of education making you successful shown to you in school and in the world.
