People seem to think he's saying "memories don't live like people do, they always remember you..." But everyone that sings that song (Jerry Butler, Tom Jones, Johnny Bristol, Patti Boulaye, the list goes on) all say "Memories don't leave like people do, they always remember you..."

Memories don't live doesn't make nearly as much since as saying they leave. I guess it kinda does sound like Mos says live instead of leave, but you can kinda hear it either way. Am I wrong on this?

Either way, amazing song, and one of Mos Def's best.

I always took it the way Beenie says it which is "memories don't live like people do."

Especially when you look at the next line.

Memories, don't LIVE like people, they always remember you.

So people die but memories live forever. And "whether things are good or bad, it's just the memories that you have"

this!!!.....yes indeed MOS DEF was doing the "Beenie Man" interpetation of that line

http://genius.com/Beenie-man-memories-lyrics

which is from a classic Beenie Man song entitled "MEMORIES" which also double as a DISS SONG against BOUNTI KILLA ....

being that MOS DEF like most brooklynites is a DANCEHALL FAN its not suprising for him to perform that lyric in that style

Interesting. Never thought about it that way.
