Teleka Patrick Case Takes New Twist With Alleged Marvin Sapp Stalking

The case of missing doctor Teleka Patrick has encountered a new twist with revelations involving allegations that the Michigan woman stalked gospel entertainer Marvin Sapp.

Patrick has been missing since December 5, 2013. WOOD TV, an NBC affiliate, reports that she was obsessed with Sapp.

So much so that she reportedly joined his church as well as insisted that she was married to him. Reports also indicate that Patrick showed up at Sapp’s home and even harassed his children.

In regards to Sapp, Patrick’s ex-husband, Ismael Calderon, suggested that she relocated from California to Michigan specifically to pursue the vocalist.

“She went to Michigan on purpose and I don’t believe it had anything to do with, ‘Oh, Michigan has a really great psychiatric residency program,’” he told Target 8. “What I heard is that there was somebody that she maybe felt that God wanted her to be with.”

In a statement, Sapp , who filed a personal protection order against Patrick, confirmed the stalker reports while also voicing his concern for Patrick and her family.

“Throughout my career, my family and I have fallen victim to inappropriate attempts to contact me by several unknown individuals. As a father of three and pastor of one of the largest congregations in West Michigan, I cannot to take this kind of obsessive attention lightly,” the singer said. “Given these previous acts, I have taken several security measures which have included obtaining a protective order to ensure our safety. Not only am I concerned about my family, I am deeply concerned about the well-being of all families. My prayers of love, safety, reconciliation and support are always and forever with God’s children.”

At this time, authorities haven’t mentioned any link to between Patrick’s alleged obsession with Sapp and her disappearance. In light of the new revelations, Patrick’s family released a statement urging the public to not speculate about her mental health.

“Regardless of Teleka’s emotional state, we believe wholeheartedly that she has encountered some harm or danger. It is unlike her to go any significant length of time without any contact with family or friends,” Patrick’s parents said.

Teleka Patrick's parents plea for help as case gains national attention

It didn't take long for national media to take notice of Teleka Patrick's disappearance. As more details surfaced about Patrick, described by family and friends as beautiful and brilliant, additional questions arose about what prompted her to leave Kalamazoo and abandon her car later on I-94 in Porter, Ind.

Videos capture the night Teleka Patrick disappeared

Two weeks after her disappearance, the Radisson Plaza Hotel & Suites in Kalamazoo released surveillance footage of Patrick trying unsuccessfully to book a room. She received a ride back to her car at Borgess Medical Center and was last seen leaving the hospital in her 1997 Lexus ES300.

As the search for Teleka Patrick entered its third week, a private investigator hired by her parents said Patrick was stressed and agitated the night she disappeared, but the reasons why were unknown. Adding to the mystery that, at that point, baffled police was the discovery of YouTube videos in which Patrick sang to an unknown love interest.

A darker side of Teleka Patrick began to emerge as the investigation by the sheriff's office entered into January 2014. That happened after her ex-husband alleged Patrick's mental illness led to their divorce and information came out about a personal-protection order against Patrick taken out by well-known Grand Rapids pastor and gospel singer Marvin Sapp.



As the Patrick case progressed, the focus shifted from the search for the talented doctor to questions about her mental state leading up to, and at the time, of her disappearance. Thousands of tweets Patrick posted spoke of her hopes and dreams and the fear of "one big psychotic break."



Seven weeks into the investigation, police had little to go on

Despite all of the revelations about Teleka Patrick's mental state, the question remained: Where is she? At a press conference in January 2014, sheriff's investigators released details about their probe and revealed that they suspected nothing criminal and had little information as to Patrick's whereabouts.




In late January, investigators in Indiana used sonar to search a frozen Lake Charles, which was just a few hudred feet from where police found Patrick's Lexus abandoned on Dec. 5, 2013, in Porter, Ind. Meanwhile, police in Kalamazoo checked on a report of a possible sighting of Patrick.


Indiana State Police investigators did multiple ground searches for Patrick after she vanished. During the majority of the investigation, detectives believed Patrick had walked from her car and gotten a ride from a passing motorist based on a search by a bloodhound a week after Patrick's disappearance.



As spring arrived in 2014 and Lake Charles began to thaw, a fisherman discovered Patrick's body on April 6, almost four months to the day she disappeared from Kalamazoo.

Teleka Patrick's death was ruled an accidental drowning and toxicology tests revealed "nothing out of the ordinary," police said last year. In a police report, Detective Sgt. William Sparrow concluded Patrick "left the Kalamazoo County area on her own free will" when he closed his investigation on April 16, 2014. However, one year later, Patrick's mother, Irene, says she is dissatisified with the police investigation.
