STAMFORD -- Police charged a New York woman with passing counterfeit bills Friday and are urging merchants to use caution when accepting large bills printed prior to 1996.

Faith Sellers, 18, of Redfern Avenue in Far Rockaway, was charged Friday night with six counts of first-degree forgery, two counts of sixth-degree larceny and conspiracy after police said she used fake $100 bills at two stores at Stamford Town Center.

Stamford police Capt. Richard Conklin said the bills Sellers was using are difficult to detect since they're made of genuine U.S. currency paper. Using a chemical wash or bleach, counterfeiters take the printing off of $1 bills and then use a color printer to transfer the image of a $100 bill on the paper which looks and feels like actual currency. The bills also test positive when special ink is applied because the paper is real. Bills printed after 1996 have special watermarks and security threads that are harder to duplicate.

"We want people to know that the bills are out there and merchants need to be extremely careful, especially with bills that were printed prior to 1990," Conklin said.

Conklin said Sellers and another woman used the fake bills at the Zumiez clothing and Lids hat stores in the mall, but police were called after the merchant at Zumiez questioned the authenticity of the $100 bill. Conklin said Sellers was making small purchases the stores to get real cash in return.

After inspecting the bill, Conklin and another officer doing an extra-duty job at the mall, determined it was fake and got a description of the suspect. While they were interviewing the merchant, Conklin received a report that two woman were trying to use a questionable bill at the Godiva chocolate shop, but the merchant there suspected the bill was fake and didn't make the sale.

Sellers was trying to leave the mall when police caught up to her. The second woman she was with was not found, Conklin said.

Police found four more fake $100 bills on Sellers who has an extensive criminal record, including robbery, credit card theft and resisting arrest charges, Conklin said.

Sellers is being held on $200,000 bond and is expected to appear in state Superior Court in Stamford on Tuesday.
