@Hades @Pinyapplesuckas thanks for the Moka Only posts. I've given all the posted tracks a listen and even the Martian Xmas album.
My opinion:
The guy gives me a
strong Dilla/Madlib vibe. Dilla-ish beats, Madlib-ish rhyming. Which is cool but not my cup of tea. I fukk with both of those cats but I'm more of a Nas/Mobb/Wu/Rocky guy, particularly when it comes to voice/delivery. I like rappers who spit with more emphasis.
The good thing is that Moka doesn't sound like a whiny bytch. He sounds like a chill Vancouver cat who loves making lots of music.
Which brings me to my second issue: I don't care for prolific artists. I'm far more interested in standout songs than large catalogue. None of the Moka songs I heard were wack. But few were more than alright. Pleasant background music while I do work. I feel like the dude could spend more time crafting each track into an absolute banger, instead of releasing 45 albums full of alright tunes.
In a weird way, Moka Only reminds me of Lil B. Both are prolific and have recorded tons of shyt. They've both worked together and I see the connection now. Both have that laidback and semi abstract vibe.
But I prefer Lil B.
Even though Lil B has a ton of unlistenable garbage, and is less talented than Moka, Lil B is more charismatic and extreme than Moka. So when Lil B hits gold, he really hits it. The great songs stand the fukk out.
Moka doesn't have a bad song from what I've heard. But all his shyt runs together. It's the same Dilla-esque vibe. I've heard like 40 tracks from this guy and I can only tell 2 apart.
Lil B is all over the map sonically and that makes his shyt stand out more.
Just some thoughts. Criticisms aside, I appreciate Moka and thanks for putting me on. I get why y'all fukk with him. My favorite song for now is still "Do" off Vermillion.
