COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — A woman accused of shooting her own son dead in Februaryaccepted a plea deal in court Monday.
Laquandra Williams, 44, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 18 years to life in prison.
Columbus police said on Feb. 19, Williams had tried to stab her son, 21-year-old Jahaad Hughes, before shooting him at their apartment on the 2800 block of Drew Heights Place in east Columbus.
Witnesses said this followed an argument between the two and that Hughes was trying to leave the apartment when he was shot.
Officers said Williams admitted to shooting Hughes when they arrived at the scene, and she was taken into custody and charged with aggravated murder and felonious assault.
Messages from an online obituary page describe Hughes as a nice, respectable, and quiet young man.
A series of victim impact statements were also read in court.
Williams was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 18 years."What happened to my son on February 19th, 2024, when he was pronounced dead, the victim of a gunshot wound that entered his back at the hands of his mother, was no accident. Jahaad's murder was the result of years of systemic abuse that spiraled out of control," said Hughes' father, Jaydee Hugues, in open court.
