A group of
Buddhist monks walking from Fort Worth, Texas to Washington D.C. have reached the
Atlanta metro area, and their
path now takes them inside the perimeter.
The monks, under the name of a "
Walk for Peace," spent the night of Dec. 29 in Morrow, Georgia where a ceremony was held during their evening rest.
A previous estimated route kept the monks outside the perimeter of Atlanta, marked by I-285 encircling the city. Their path updates and changes as plans are made for the monks to find lunch and overnight rest stops.

The monks can be tracked live as their "Walk for Peace" route updates.
In the planned itinerary for day 66, on Dec. 30, the monks plan to stop in Rainbow Park at the Porter Sanford III Performing Arts & Community Center in Decatur for lunch. Visitors can greet the monks between 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.
The monks will then walk to the Beacon Municipal Complex where a "peace gathering" will be held at 2:30 p.m.
An overnight rest stop has not been announced.
What is the 'Walk for Peace'?
The walk originates from the Huong Dao Vipassana Bhavana Center in Forth Worth, Texas, and includes 19 monks and one rescue dog named
Aloka.
The walk will take an estimated 120 days and cross 2,300 miles not as a sign of protest, but to "
raise awareness of peace, loving kindness, and compassion across America and the world."
Support personnel for the monks provide food and water, but the monks also accept food, water, prayers, flowers and other items as donations as they pass through towns in America. The monks will also accept offerings for lodging for their lunch or overnight stops.
Crowds have gathered along the path to welcome, pray and celebrate with the monks as they pass through the South.
