A University of Louisville student dismissed from school for her part in a racial brawl may be closer to getting back in class. The freshman from Lexington, entered a guilty plea to fourth degree assault in Louisville a few weeks ago.

She stabbed a man who was part of a group of whites who brutally attacked her boyfriend. Many say the system is flawed, and now Montequa Jackson is close to getting a second chance.

Fox 41 aired the surveillance tape last week. In April, an Jermaine Stafford, an African-American student was attacked by several whites who were students and non-students. At the conclusion, Stafford's girlfriend Jackson, stabbed one of the attacking whites, who outnumbered her boyfriend.

"Montequa was a student in my class and she was an excellent student she's a Porter scholar, extremely bright and articulate and when it happened to her she said it was self defense," said Kaila Story, professor.

"It was an unfortunate event that happened on campus, I believe that Montequa does not necessarily pose a threat," said Jason Walker, friend.

The fall semester is well underway at the university, and people are still talking about the massive flooding from a few weeks ago, the basketball scandal with head coach Rick Pitino, but there's also another groundswell.

As Fox 41 first reported, The University Code of Student Conduct Committee, dismissed Jackson from school, but now that may be reversed on appeal. University proceedings are confidential, but there's a lot going on behind the scenes.

"We do have the process in place, the code of student conduct, we consistently apply that to all students, no matter what the case is what the situation is so we can be fair. That is outlined and that's the process we're still going through now," said Mike Mardis, Dean Of Students.

"Hopefully we'll get great news she's been readmitted to the University of Louisville and she will go on as being the student we know she is capable of being," said Derwin Webb, Jackson's attorney.

I can't find any article about her actually being reinstated though.
