Since January 1, retailers have announced plans to shutter more than 6,700 stores in the U.S., according to Fung Global Retail & Technology, a retail think tank.
That beats the previous all-time high of 6,163 store closings, which hit in 2008 amid the financial meltdown, according to Credit Suisse (CS).

...

At least 300 retailers have filed for bankruptcy so far this year, according to figures released by BankruptcyData.com in June.
2017 just set the all-time record for store closings

Shoppers are becoming savvier thanks to information gleaned from the internet. I know I've discovered brands that were previously foreign to me. Like Netflix and other streaming services eating into the mind share of network television, the democratization of the internet has resulted in consumers having a lot more alternatives to Macy's and other conventional brick and mortar locations.

In Silicon Valley, the homeless illustrate a growing divide

Remember the good old days when you could tell homeless people to just get a job?:mjcry:

The booming economy, fueled by the tech sector, and decades of under-building have led to an historic shortage of affordable housing. It has upended the stereotypical view of people out on the streets as unemployed: They are retail clerks, plumbers, janitors - even teachers - who go to work, sleep where they can and buy gym memberships for a place to shower.

Working and homeless.:francis:
