Kid's abused. Mother does nothing to try and stop it using Alcohol to placate herself from what's going on since she's more than likely being neglected too as could be seen by the same sour look she shares with her daughter.
Buy's the kid a stuffed doll cause all innocent kids require a stuffed animal for companionship? And that's what she is to her, yet another innocent kid, nothing's wrong. Warns her not to lose it like the others despite despite knowing this one will end up missing too.
The animal coming to life and looking to play and cheer her up is a lopsided facsimile of the happy child she should be were her home life a normal one.
"Storytime" is announced, no sneaking, no creep open door, no subterfuge. You see the dread on her face, the only emotion she displays.
The moon shifting in both panels shows you the length of time. Then the animal realizes that it can't do anything for a kid like that and "loses its magic" by jumping out of the window and landing in a pile of other similarly "discarded" animals, representing a child's innocence lost as the cycle continues.
