I've been watching a lot of past drafts recently just kind of going through the busts and steals and also the times where teams made the exact right choice. It got me thinking about who were the most hyped prospects pre-pro (so say in College or HS) in each sport in my lifetime and how they've turned out as pros.

LeBron James (Basketball) - Easily the most hyped player in any sport I've seen in my lifetime. LeBron was being hyped to the moon by pretty much every sports publication by junior year in HS. Selected #1 overall in the 2003 draft (in a top 5 that includes 4 first ballot hall of famers! and arguably the biggest bust in NBA history as well) LeBron lived up to every bit of the hype and became one of the greatest players in NBA history.

Andrew Luck (American Football) - Andrew Luck was widely considered the most hyped NFL prospect since John Elway nearly 30 years prior. Elway went on to become a Hall of Fame QB so the expectations were through the roof for Andrew to have a similar career. The Colts were even willing to dump one of the greatest players to ever play the game in Peyton Manning off of a broken neck thinking he was likely washed and Luck provided an easy way to move forward with a new franchise QB. Luck was selected #1 in the 2012 NFL draft. Luck seemed to be developing into a fantastic QB in his time with the Colts and made 4 pro bowls but their inability to provide him good protection led to Luck piling up injuries quickly which eventually led to an early retirement in 2019 shortly before his 30th birthday. Honestly, Luck retiring so early really sucks and I would love for him to return to the League again. He was already a great QB and was developing into an amazing one. I know Washington was flirting with the idea of luring him out of retirement so I'm hoping he does one day.

Stephen Strasburg (Baseball) - Baseball is kind of weird cause you pretty much never hear about anybody before they're drafted. The MLB draft is pretty much a non-event, likely due to the Minor League system since many top picks don't make it to the Majors till years later. So it's very, very rare we ever hear about any baseball prospects on a very public level until they've spent some time playing minor league ball. Strasburg was a rare case where scouts and pros were hyping him to the moon before he has even played minor league ball. He was selected #1 overall in the 2009 MLB draft and after some time in the minors made his debut in the summer of 2010. Strasburg was an instrumental part in the Nationals 2019 World Series victory winning World Series MVP and had an amazing run in that 2019 playoff in general. Outside of that though, while he's not quite a bust, his career has been fairly disappointing. Riddled with injuries and only making 3 All Star games in 12 seasons, Strasburg is far from the best pitcher in the majors and hasn't come close to the future hall of famer expectations placed on him before his debut. Currently he has the Nationals saddled with possibly one of the worst contracts in all of sports.

Sidney Crosby (Hockey) - Easily the most hyped hockey prospect in modern times and possibly ever, Crosby was selected #1 overall in the NHL Draft and while he has struggled a bit with injuries during his career he has captured 3 Stanley Cups and 2 MVPs and is considered one of the best NHL players of all time.

Freddy Adu (Soccer/Football) - US Media pretty much never talks about soccer so it was pretty crazy when sports magazines and TV would not shut the hell up about this 14 year old can't miss prospect. "The Next Pele" might be the biggest bust in sports history. He basically wound up being a journeyman and never came close to becoming the mega star he was projected to be. Like not even glimpses of it before injuries or anything he was just a complete flop. Idk I'd need the soccer heads on here to confirm how Adu was viewed on an international level back when he was 14. Was it just in the US he was getting hyped like that? It's so crazy to me that everyone else I mentioned at least had some success and Adu alone wound up being such a bust in every way. There's also the speculation about his actual age but that's not confirmed

Anyway, sorry for the essay :laff:
Some of the older heads can mention a few different names if they want and might even disagree with some of the ones I've listed for other names. Reggie Bush & Mike Vick are two of the ones I thought of but I feel like their hype wasn't close to Luck's.

I really wanna know if Adu was even hyped like that abroad.

Above the fray.
Before Bron, Felipe Lopez was hyped as the next big thing. Cover of Sports Illustrated in high school , the whole 9 yards.

In football Brian Bosworth was Dennis Rodman before Dennis Rodman as a college player. Bo Jackson humiliated him in the pros on MNF and the hype was over.

Before Cosby, Eric Lindross was super hyped hockey player.

The hype for Eric Lindros was unreal in the very early 90s. The ensuing controversy after he was drafted by the Quebec Nordiques after his camp (mainly his helicopter parents) told them not to draft him was just as huge.

New York Rangers and Philadelphia Flyers both offered HUGE trade packages to Quebec for a kid who had yet to play a pro game, and I think there was some kind of weird ties between the arbitrator of the case and either the Islanders or Flyers - two of the Rangers biggest rivals (my memory is fuzzy on it at the moment, and I'm reaching faaaarrrr into my memory banks but I think the arbitrator's name was Larry Bertuzzi). Lindros is awarded to the Flyers, the Rangers win a historic Cup a season or 2 later, and the trade compensation awarded to the Nordiques helps fuel several Cup runs after the franchise relocates to Colorado and becomes the Avalanche, akin to the Herschel Walker trade fueling the 90s Cowboys.

Lindros of course has a dominant career, living up to the hype. Gets the Flyers to a finals appearance but loses to the Red Wings (1997), but the future seems inevitably bright. Then the concussion issues begin, and he's never the same after that. And the team that Lindross plays for after leaving Philly?

The New York Rangers.

I'm gonna name some guys who won't be at the top of many lists.

Basketball:

Derrick Coleman - He was supposed to revolutionize basketball. 6'10" PF who could shoot, handle the ball, pass and bang on the blocks. Never had the internal drive though.
Larry Johnson - His UNLV teams rampaged college basketball for two years until Duke beat them in their second Tourney meeting. He was a skilled, athletic dynamo.
Shaq - A physical speciman. Tore a rim off in college. Christian Laettner was the most famous college player at the time and Shaq was still the no-brainer #1 pick.
Jerry Stackhouse - He came out when there was a lot of "Next Jordan" talk when talented wings came around so that swirled around him. He really fit the bill since he went to UNC.
Tim Duncan - Woulda been the #1 pick in '96 but decided to go back to Wake Forest for his senior season. Was expected to enter the league and have an immediate impact. He was First Team All-NBA as a rookie and no one was surprised.
Michael Olowokandi - Nobody saw him play but he put up monster numbers in his junior year at Pacific. I remember reading a lot of articles about him by writers who didn't know what to expect out of him but there was a strong chance he could go first in the draft.
Corey Maggette - On a stacked Duke team (Elton Brand, Trajan Langdon, Shane Battier and William Avery in the starting lineup), Corey Maggette got the most hype and he came off the bench. 6'6" and chiseled :dame: there was quite a bit of talk about him eventually being the best player from that team.
Marvin Williams - Had a ton of hype coming out of high school before going to UNC. Some next Jordan/Kobe whispers about him. Was supposed to be a crazy athlete and even when he didn't show that much during his only year in college, he still went second in the draft from a promise by the Hawks. No matter what, he got steady "potential" talk about him but I never saw it. Harrison Barnes was the next gen version of him.

Football:

Ron Powlus - Was supposed to win two Heismans at Notre Dame. Had an ungodly amount of hype.
Andre Wadsworth - He went third in the '98 draft that had Peyton and Charles Woodson. This guy was basically supposed to be the next Reggie White. He was billed by some outlets as the most can't miss prospect in the draft.
Reggie Bush - Still the most exciting college player I've ever seen. That whole USC team was rockstar status and he was the biggest star.
Jadeveon Clowney - Had "we've never seen anybody like this before" hype that went next level after the play against Michigan in the bowl game. I would argue he was the most hyped player of the 21st century. Look at his high school highlight reel. It's like @Buckeye Fever wildest dream come true. :dead:

Lot of good names here that I'd have mentioned. Few more:

Ovie, certainly around greater DC anyway.

AP - I remember some were saying he was ready for the NFL right out of HS.

Wiggins - remember "#RigginForWiggins"?

Ohtani - we were hearing about him a good two full years before even coming stateside.

Ricky Rubio had crazy hype. Touted as the best pure point in years, ala Rondo/Kidd. His shooting was weird. Had a decent long 2 jumper, crap 3, but really good free throws.

Developed into one of the better backups in the league today.

Michael Beasley is a sore spot. Was supposed to help bridge the gap for the Heat. A million dumbass decisions and grams of reefer later, he's gone to Minny. :snoop:

The potential was there, just nobody knew the person gatekeeping was Beas himself
