What do you mean by average?

Most people are going to lead relatively unexceptional lives by our societal standards.

Do you mean that is closer to bad, or closer to good?

It's neither good or bad. For example, most people won't become multi-millionaires. but then again, most people will also not end up in Prison or commit murder.

Serious questions though....

are they average because they tried their best and ended up there, or because of the way the world is set up?

In my opinion, most people will lead average lives are the result of one of three possible scenarios:

1. They're born unexceptional. (Common)
ie. average athletic ability, average intelligence, average creativity, etc.

2. They tried to be exceptional, in accordance with their natural talents/inclinations, and failed. (Rare)
This could be the result of external factors such as racism or the sudden development of an illness.
However, this doesn't apply to delusional people reaching out of their league or people expecting a handout.
Here are some examples:

If you're 5'3 with a 2 inch vertical and flat feet, you're not making it into the NBA.

If you're a decent looking small town girl, with no money, little resources, and you move to NY to follow your dreams on Broadway. Chances are it ain't gonna work out and you could end up selling your ass on backpages for a hot meal and rent.

If you're gifted with a naturally mathematical mind, but you decide to become a janitor instead of going into a S.T.E.M field. Any failure that occurs is strictly on you.

3. People who are exceptional are willingly or unknowingly choosing to live unexceptional lives. (Very Common).

It comes a consequence of herd mentality or an unconscious fear of failure. (Usually its a combination of both).

People deeply crave acceptance from their peers, they're afraid to stand out. Taking "the road less traveled" can attract unwanted attention and, it will alienate your friends and family. But, that is the price to pay to be great.

Still, a lot of talented people will take the easy route. It minimizes the risk of failure. Underachieving talented people wrongfully assume that failure brings shame and humiliation. especially, when an individual puts themselves out there. To them, It's essentially seen as proof of their inferiority and that's too big of a risk to take. Like Kanye said, "cause when you try hard that's when you die hard."

tragically, when people stifle their true potential it always leads to depression or anxiety.

Literally anyone can be great but most of Yall aren't disciplined enough to go through the several years of practice and low returns that is required to gain expertise in anything. Luckily for people like me(and hopefully you), this opens a pretty narrow road to success if you'd stay motivated by your future position and future comfort.
You all have access to a database of all the information human beings have ever gathered at the touch of your fingers. You can literally learn any skill or concept anytime you want and their are thousands of free college level courses online. But nah, Yall rather just fukk around all day and read shyt that annoys you so you can complain.
Most of Yall rather watch the wealth and affluent lifestyles of others instead of learning how to gain that wealth yourselves. The threads on here about learning new skills and self teaching and studying always get low response rate because no one can accept that there is NO SHORTCUT TO TRUE SUCCESS.
Yall want your fish but don't wanna learn how to pick out bait, cast, or learn patience. Yall prefer to watch internet usernames argue, and bask in the fukkery to let you kill 2 hours. Instant gratification has no staying power.
This isn't information you don't know you just ignore it. Stop relying on your future selves to do better. Do it now, because most people won't. Do it now because you owe it to yourself to unlock your full potential. Do it now because the true you is the best you can be. Do it now.
...Throughout the publication, Gladwell repeatedly mentions the "10,000-Hour Rule", claiming that the key to achieving world class expertise in any skill, is, to a large extent, a matter of practicing the correct way, for a total of around 10,000 hours...
...While writing the book, Gladwell noted that "the biggest misconception about success is that we do it solely on our smarts, ambition, hustle and hard work." In Outliers, he hopes to show that there are a lot more variables involved in an individual's success than society cares to admit, and he wants people to "move away from the notion that everything that happens to a person is up to that person"....

I can understand the first part. You work hard and practice and you can achieve being a master of whatever you are practicing. Like Steph Curry and his jump shots are from practicing a lot. But, there are people who just don't make it into the NBA. They might make it into Euro pro leagues. That might not been seen as success.
:lupe:
I can understand the second part where "it's who you know, not what you know." Rich white kids who go to prestigious prep schools and then go onto an Ivy League school are pretty much set for future success just by graduating and not really being an over achiever. It's just connections and help from people in the right positions. Of course, those who are over achievers are setting themselves up to be very successful.
