So guys like Kendrick, Schoolboy, Asap Rocky, Drake, Kanye, Jay-z, Nas, J-Cole, Wiz get most of the attention these days. You could possibly include some other people like Freddie Gibbs, Ab-soul, Danny Brown, Chance the Rapper, Joey Badass, Action Bronson, Meek Mill, Earl Sweatshirt, Big Kirt, The Underachievers who seem to be getting more attention too - although you could probably argue some of them aren't getting enough. I'm sure there's others I didn't mention.

But here's my list of guy who should be getting more props

Reks - dude is the best in the game right now imo. He's been putting out solid music for 10+ years without any fall off, not too many people who can say that. Guys has a great flow, solid rhymes, and makes lyrics that actually have meaning behind them. I really can't say any of his songs are straight up bad, however he is lacking a legit classic album, although one could make an argument for Along Came the Chosen. But for some reason the dude gets nowhere near the respect or attention he deserves imo.

Thaione Davis - another dude who has been in the game for 10+ years, although I feel like he is just recently reaching his peak, especially when it comes to making solid albums. Dude has one of the smoothest flows, and like Reks he has solid rhymes and deep content. Being from Chicago he reminds me of Common with his laid back style. However like Reks, his lyrical complexity is lacking when it comes to multis/metaphors/similies, and he is lacking in a truly great album. Still you won't hear a wack track from him

These next guys I've discovered more recently and haven't listened to real in depth, so perhaps I'm jumping the gun with my thoughts on them, but from what I've heard I don't understand why they're not more popular among hip hop heads

YC the Cynic
Emilio Rojas

Reks is one of the worst lyricists I have ever heard.

not a single artist in this thread blew my mind except Skyzoo, I'll stick with the artists who get most of the attention these days.

Lyrical skill is not the only thing that makes rappers good. Flow, content, and delivery should be taken into account too. Guys like 2pac and DMX were not great lyricists. I personally wouldn't consider Jay-Z a great lyricist aside from Reasonable Doubt and some songs here and there. Neither Outkast member has superb lyrical talent imo. Doesn't mean those guys don't make good music.

These guys are rapping over some really nice beats. But the music comes out flat or awkward. How is Emilio rapping so aggressive on that Breaking Point beat? The content is too aggressive, the flow is too aggressive. The Unlearn beat overpowered Reks. I can see Buckshot Shorty ripping that unlearn track to shreds.

Also a lot of those guys narrative feel shallow. This is why rappidity rappers always have a hard time. Because charm and adding personality to your music is what sets you apart, look at Black Thought, Talib, and Jay Electronica.

You can be rappidity rap like Redman or Pharoah Monch but still show some type of progression. It hard to invest in a dude that's gonna rap the same way for 15 tracks.

A lot of the production reminds of the era of Rawkus, Duck Down and Rhymesayers + Hi Tek x Static Selektah. So, I love the beats.

I can't listen to a lot of those rappers, and I loved the underground push from 1996 to 2001, these new rappers are a step backward.
