Are there any? Subject of course to your definition of the word "likable" is it even possible? Remember, protagonists can be good or bad, but is it possible to have an unlikable protagonist (can you name one)?

Post season 4 Walter White -Breaking Bad

Shinji Ikari- Neon Genesis Evangelion (still one the greatest anime characters in my opinion)

Travis Bickles- Taxi Driver (Racist)

Walter White never became "unlikable", that's partially credit to the actor. Duke (Hal from MITM) kept him likable throughout

Never seen Taxi Driver but DeNiro has too much charisma to ever come off as "unlikable" :ehh:

Kenny Powers was a piece of shyt... but everyone loved him.

One of the main rules I always see about screenwriting is "don't write an unlikable lead" and it bothers the shyt out of me. Why the fukk not? Why do i have to "root" for the main character? it's so dumb. I wrote a pilot about dads who pressure their sons when it comes to sports and had a bunch of people read it, and almost all the complaints were that the lead guy was "pretty unlikable." fukk that noise.

pretty sure he's miserable right from the jump.

first episode he runs over a guy and beats the shyt out of him.

the guy is a criminal.

Yeah, but again, Tony never became "unlikable". Charisma is a mutha fukka, I'm telling you, it's why I didn't even find Denver "unlikable" in "Training day".The right actor can make anyone "not unlikable" even if they're not strictly "likable".

well we like tony because he's got swag, he's funny, enjoyable to be around, etc..

but as a person he is detestable. it is very much a love hate relationship. in fact i am willing to bet that there are people who can't get down with sopranos solely because it asks us to identify with such an evil person.

So, is it fair to say that if the audience (or individual audience member) doesn't like the protagonist it's almost impossible for most of them to get through the movie/show?
