I keep seeing this argumentative tool get misused because few people understand what it means. To provide some historical background, a certain poster (@NYC Rebel) started using this very frequently a few years back. The thing was, he was rarely ever taking a specific position and he was not necessarily debating the existence or non-existence of a fact, he would often just be pointing out that somebody's reasoning was flawed.
That's what you kids don't seem to understand: Moving the goalposts means that you are changing YOUR OWN REASONING based on inconvenient hiccups in your initial thought. For example, just recently, devout kobestans have been attacking Lebron for being 2-3 in the NBA finals, while Kobe is 5-2. They have specifically stated that Lebron's winning percentage in the Finals is worthy of criticism. In response, somebody (:JJ
pointed out Tim Duncan has a better win percentage in the Finals. At that point, said kobestans started making various arguments:
1. Tim Duncan lost to an eight seed.
2. Kobe's been to more finals
3. Tim Duncan never tied Donyell Marshall's record for 3 pointers in a game.
Those responses, those are MOVING GOALPOSTS because you are changing the rationale to fit your predetermined conclusion.
On the other hand, the other party in a discussion is free to criticize YOUR fukkING GOAL POSTS. If the other party doesn't like your reasoning, that is not moving goal posts.
Unfortunately, the idiots who misuse the phrase are the ones with such acute ADD that they will think this post is too long. But I don't feel like working so fukk them anyway.
