I grew up 30 minutes from Greenville. Greenville is where everyone in that area went to hangout. It's surrounded by a bunch of little country towns and it was the only town in Eastern NC that had malls, chain restaurants (ie Texas Roadhouse, Red Lobster, Hooters, etc) and now it's pretty much the only town with any movie theatres east of Rocky Mount. Like people said, ECU is King especially now that it has national notoriety. It's amazing to see how far it has come. Of course Greenville is heavy ECU country but it's also a part of ACC country (UNC, NC STATE, Duke, etc) so you are going to see a lot of Carolina Blue and the start of the ACC BBall Tournament is a holiday. High School sports (football/bball) is also pretty big. RDU is about 1.5 hours away...

Greenville. Its one of the few cities I can look down upon from the thrones of Raleigh-Durham area abode.
