Apparently Ray Parker Jr wrote it for a Jamaican artist name Junior Tucker. He even included it on his album before New Edition recorded their version of it.

Tucker was actually 16 when he recorded this.

Not going to lie I slightly like his version better, it got a smooth/chill beachy vibe to it.

From what I read, Tucker had trouble with getting promo for his debut album due to fears that would have been overshadowed by Triller. Makes you wonder how big of a star he would of been.
