someone on twitter had the nerve to say Sonny Liston had the top 3 jab in boxing history. I thought he was full of shyt because all I really knew about him was that he made niqqas scared, was connected to mobsters, and Ali beating that ass.

But the tape doesn’t lie. This man was a great boxer. His jab was better than Holmes and maybe Ali’s because it was such a HEAVY punch. He could flick it out there fast and put his weight behind it. Helps to have a long ass reach and a 15 inch fist. :scust: but this dude was knocking niqqas out with a fukking JAB. He was really an all around great boxer.

Knocked a dude out with a jab at 3:00 and 3:46 :hhh:

Not appreciating how great Liston was is a disservice to Ali's own greatness.

That too. The gravity of Ali beating him twice hits me that much more now.

I still believe he threw both Ali fights dude was a killer heavyweight.

The abuse he got no only from cacs but his own people :snoop:

They wanted light skin Floyd Patterson or light skin Cassius clay as champion.:mjpls:

Sonny Liston top 5 heavyweight all time

"Liston never complained about prison, saying he was guaranteed three meals every day."

never fight a nikka that likes prison.

People gloss over all this without really researching.

The 2nd fight was postponed 3 days before the bout because Ali needed surgery on a hernia. I’ve read that Liston was in much better shape for the second fight than the first. Then it was postponed 6 months.

They don’t even know for sure what year Liston was born. Look at his Wikipedia. The birthdate says “unknown”. I’ve seen it anywhere from 1929 thru 1933. His first fight with Ali was in 1964 which would put Sonny in his mid-30s against a 22 year old Ali :mjlol:Ali was too fukking fast for a 34 year old.

The story of Sonny Liston that airs through mainstream media is mostly told through the perspective of white people. He was the big scary negro to Floyd Patterson's good negro. When you really dive into his life he comes across as a tragic figure more than anything

He was the second youngest of 25 children and his father beat him almost every day, to the point where the scars would still be visible years later. He actually wanted to go to school but because he was illiterate he quickly dropped out and couldn't find any real jobs, which led to his life of crime to make ends meet. It was actually in prison where he learned how to box. The only people who would finance his professional career had underworld ties, which later led to his affiliations with the mob. While these ties were beneficial early in his career it was later used against him when he was trying to get a title shot

Police would mess with him every chance they got. One time Liston fought back against these harassments, which led to him being jailed and out of boxing for two years. When he returned he picked up right where he left off, beating all the top-ranked fighters while the champ Floyd Patterson was fighting less than stellar competition. Patterson's trainer and manager Cus D'Amato, as well as the boxing powers that be didn't want anything to do with Sonny potentially becoming champ. If Liston won then they feared they would be handing control of boxing back to the mob, which they were trying to phase out

It soon became clear that Liston was being blackballed from a title shot. President John F Kennedy and the NAACP were among the many who didn't want Patterson to fight Liston, fearing that it would hurt the civil rights movement. Patterson was seen as the type of black person that they wanted to be represented as champ for mainstream America. In order to secure a shot Liston attacked Patterson by saying he was drawing the color line against his own race, basically shaming him into a title shot. The plan worked and Liston destroyed Patterson in one round to become champ... but he was still hated by both whites and blacks.

All Liston really wanted was the love and adoration of the public and his people, something that unfortunately he never was able to have. That's why he seemingly loved kids, because they were too young to really hate him the way adults did

Liston gets the respect in any serious boxing circles.

Mainstream wise, overall and for casuals, that’s kinda just the way the ball rolls. Only a few are gonna get recognition.

Yeah his history outside of the ring is really sad. I understand record keeping was poor during Jim Crow, but not really knowing when you were born would be tough. He also died under suspicious circumstances via a heroin overdose

I've always said that Liston, Hagler, and Lennox probably had the best jabs in the business.

But I know boxing and you don't so....

    Yeah...
