A North Carolina man and woman who buried his uncle’s dead body in the woods were caught when their car got stuck nearby Wednesday, police said.
Tracks in the ground led from the car with Toni Anthony Hearne, 51, and Linsey Marie Lentz, 33, inside to the corpse lying under leaves, sticks and tires behind an abandoned home, according to the Alexander County Sheriff’s Office.
A witness reported a suspicious vehicle in rural Ellendale just after noon, and deputies found the pair in a car stuck on Highway 64-90 West.

North Carolina sheriff's deputies found a man's dead body after tracks from a car with two people inside led to the buried corpse Wednesday, according to the Alexander County Sheriff's Office.
Hearne told WSOC-TV he had choked his drunk uncle Robert Adam Hearne Jr. to death in self-defense Tuesday night and “just panicked to hide him.”
“I never wanted to fight my uncle but he came in and came at me with his knife,” he said. “So we were fighting and I tried to defend myself. He was choking me and I was choking him.”

Toni Anthony Hearne, 51, and Linsey Marie Lentz, 33, are charged with murder and failure to report a death.
Hearne, who lives around 60 miles southwest in Charlotte, told the TV station Lentz wasn’t involved in his uncle’s death Thursday morning. They face charges of murder and failure to report a death, and they’re incarcerated without bond in county jail.
Hearne’s uncle lived in Stanly County, about 80 miles from the scene, and Lentz is from Albemarle, Stanly County’s seat, The Charlotte Observer reported. Investigators searched the slain man’s home and no other suspects had been arrested Thursday in the ongoing probe.
