HOUSTON — A major crash involving two vehicles left several injured, including children, in north Houston Tuesday night, according to Houston Police Lieutenant Larry Crowson.
It happened around 8 p.m. on Yale Street, south of West Tidwell Road.
Captain of HPD's North Division Ryan Watson said a Ford Expedition was seen on nearby surveillance footage traveling at a high rate of speed, possibly 100 mph.
A Chevy Avalanche that was in the first lane tried to make a right turn and ended up striking the SUV, which was in the second lane, causing it to flip into a bayou.
Watson said the driver of the SUV was picked up by another vehicle and left the scene, leaving behind his wife and four children.
All five passengers, including a woman and four children, were transported to the hospital. The oldest of the children, an 8-year-old, was thrown from the SUV. Two victims are in serious condition, while the other three remain in critical condition.
They are all expected to survive their injuries, according to Watson.
Watson said the driver of the Chevy Avalanche, the other vehicle involved in the crash, remained at the scene and has been cooperative with authorities. A dog that was thrown from the Chevy was later found.
“Looks like everybody’s going to survive this accident, but really, just, people have got to slow down. Crashes like this are completely avoidable,” said Captain Watson.
Authorities continue to investigate and are asking anyone with information on the driver of the Ford Expedition to come forward.
This is a developing story. Additional details will be added as they are learned.
