You are doing right by developing multiple streams of income for yourself, never depend on just one.

I had a similar experience where I ended up having a White lady as my supervisor who hated me with every fiber in her and I had a strong dislike for her as well. Shyt started getting real when I started getting passed up for promotions though to less qualified, less experienced, and people with a weaker resume.

I remember coming in wanting to slap the shyt out of her while literally taking off on certain days to do occasional job interviews. Like another poster already mentioned document everything. Follow up stuff your boss tells you verbally with emails and/or written documentation as well with time and dates.

Network and establish relationships with like minded people. You'll land on your feet and be better for all this.

Going on 5 years, but recently started having issues the last 2.5.

And to be clear I’m an officer in the military. Yes I’m operational but a lot of what I do is desk work, giving briefs, presentations, long term projects etc. And people either rock with you or they don’t, and that can affect your evals or you next duty station.

And the crazier part about it is all the black ppl around the country talk, and we all say yea “Just gotta hope you get a good supervisor, and can survive long enough to make your money.” I disagree in that I don’t want to be where I’m tolerated. And the world is so large, why put myself through that when I can make money elsewhere?

I got some uncles doing bad and some doing well but no one really addresses this issue. They need to start having real conversations. But in my case we were so happy to just get in the room, we were ready to be belittled/berated/dissected for a check. We so used to the white man no giving us shyt, when we get a job we do anything to keep it

If it’s army I’d rock with it. People don’t realize you making right at/under 100k net around 4 years in. That’s not bad money for anybody in this country

I feel you youngin, I've been in this corporate shyt for 10+ years now. Here's the deal: You have to build personal resilience. Cacs can sense insecurity, and in the corporate world they will dig at that until they get under your skin and run you off. You can't let that happen. You know what they fear more than anything? A black man that can do their job better than they can. At work, you should be 100% professional, show minimal emotion besides pleasantries and enough to make you human (its cool to discuss family, some hobbies, favorite food/drink, you know common things), but beyond that you present yourself as knowledgeable and unshakeable. They will have no choice but to test you (and you don't feed into it, so you win) or respect you and leave you alone.
No, its not easy. No its not simple. Yes, it's unfair. But that's the hand you're dealt in this corporate shyt :yeshrug:
Get your certifications or education in whatever field you're working in to keep yourself competitive for promotions and advancements. Do not give them ANY reason to disqualify you.
I think of it like a chess game. You have to stay at least three moves ahead of your company. Know what the company's goal is and where they're going, and be suited and qualified to perform those functions before they are.
I have a lot more to say about this subject. I am in Management, trending toward upper management (:jawalrus:), so PM me if you really want some advice. There's a lot of shyt I wish I know when I first got into this fukking corporate game.
