If you intend on getting serious about golf down the road, I would recommend investing a bit more for irons than if you just wanted to try it out.

If you just want to try it out, you can buy a full starter set for around $200. This will include bag, woods, irons and putter. (Maybe $300)

If you intend on giving golf the good ole college try, you will spend approximately $300 for an iron set alone. (used is fine) you can get some good used sets from golfsmith, dikk's, etc.

Taylor Made is a strong line that has a lot of good irons like (Burners, R9s, CBG)

Titleist makes great irons and wedges, but they tend to suit better to the slightly advanced golfers.

good luck

Id say try to get a set for the cheapest you can without going out there with some real busted clubs.

I wouldnt splurge on a set right of the bat, even if you are looking to take it competitively or whatever other dude was trying to say. Most likely youre going to need to really find your swing for a while and theres no sense in damaging expensive clubs if you are not ready to take your game to the next level yet. But this depends on how comfortable you feel with your game as of now. I would even try to borrow some clubs off a friend that plays or something (maybe they have some older clubs around). Thats just me though.

I'm looking for some new irons now and you're not gonna find a lot for under $300, most decent sets start around there.

I have a Callaway driver, Bridgestone woods/hybrids, and Titleist irons. You just gotta hit em and find the shyt you like :yeshrug:

If you're just starting though, Adams irons are good and not the most expensive.

I saw a Wilson Set at Sports Authority for like $220. I think I'm gonna go with those...

That's probably the best route to go, to start out. Golf takes time/patience but if you stick with it you will get better and it gets real addicting. Good luck man.

What I've found is that clubs don't make huge leaps year to year. If you're just getting into golf, get some used clubs from a couple seasons ago. Most golfers have cash and like to buy new shyt for vanity purposes. Those are the same guys who blame their game on their clubs year after year and never improve. It all starts with the swing, and that doesn't get betting ON the golf course, it gets better at the range.

Like I said, hit some clubs at local golf shops or sporting goods stores, and if you like them, head home and check out Ebay. There is always someone selling their old shyt for cheaper than you can get it retail.

I'm a 12 handicap and swinging:
RocketBallz Driver (9 degree) (2nd hand)
TaylorMade 3 wood (13 degree)
Callaway Diablo Edge Irons (3h, 4h, 5-P) (2nd hand)
Adams Wedges- Tom Watson (52, 56, 60 degree)
Some shytty blade putter because I lost my Nike while drunk somehow.

Of course the ATL
Like some of the other posters said, get you a starter set from Wal Mart or buy a set from your local 9 hole/18 hole course. I wouldn't seriously invest in clubs (which can run several thousands for a legit name brand) till you start playing regularly (a few times a week).

I wouldn't more pay more than 200-300 and I'd only get:

Driver
3 wood
5 wood
3-9 irons
Sand wedge
Pitching wedge
Putter

Max of 14 clubs in your bag anyway, you don't need specialized irons/hybrids yet

I just started playing golf maybe 3-4 months ago. I use to hit the driving range with my Pops, but never really got too serious with it. If you're really gonna play and stick with it, i'd recommend getting a golf lesson or 2 before u make a purchase. That's the route I took and my instructor was able to analyze my swing and give me a good idea on what type of clubs to look for considering the type of swing I have (stiff shaft instead of a flexible shaft, grip thickness etc...) Without his advice, I probably would've ended up with a set that didn't really fit my swing.

I just bought my 1st set of clubs about 2 months ago. I went to a golf pro shop that had their own driving range and told them what type of clubs I needed based on my instructors advice. They gave me 4 different brands to try and I ended up getting the Taylormade RBZ set. It cost me $400 though.

I try to play at least 9 holes and hit the driving range once a week. It's a fun game, but it's very frustrating at the same time. Good luck.
