the whole family is a piece of shyt, but i guess he sorta kinda redeemed himself

That's why he's a piece of shyt. It was all about him. Everyone else comes out looking like the devil incarnate (mom/pops/Lieutenant Tom) or so pathetic as to demand pity (Lola). But he's the knight in shining armor who is essentially trying to redeem his family's (dis)honor. And even though he claims to have been disgusted by his mothers treatment of Lola at the end of the day he essentially continued her servitude. $200/week for a lifetime of torture? And then trying to turn his mother into a sympathetic figure just because she was a doctor during a time when women were less represented in the profession?

This story doesn't bring honor to Lola's life. It's just a vehicle for his professional aspirations. Now everyone is going to crow about his "brutal honesty" and "complicated/tortured feelings" blah blah.
