Mental health in the black community needs to be addressed. Not ignored, not shamed, not silenced.
Rip.
It's starts with family and friends taking a more proactive approach. Check up on your people on the regular.

It damn sure isn't going to come from the government anytime soon, as mental health budgets have been on a downward spiral for at least a decade.

HELL
I'm sorry to hear. did he have any signs?
He was struggling with guilt and shame from his past, and dealing with being on probation for a long time. I was able to relate to him since I had gone through the same things, that's what made us such good friends. I was able to understand him and be that shoulder to lean on when things got tough. Either I would reach out to him or he would reach out to me, we'd get food or go hoop or something and talk about whatever was on our minds.

I know people say "check on your friends and family" but we always stayed in touch, talked about all kinds of things.

This is the best option, however; people aren't open enough to accept that offer of help.

One of the reasons I started therapy is because no one asked if I was okay. They assumed I was because I'm always composed. That truly hurt me.

Everyone is going through something and it's best we are ready to be there for them when they're ready.
