My homegirl from New Orleans was offered a 110K offer for a job in Buffalo, NY

Is it for the same job she has in NOLA?
I know pay differences exist, but 50 K seems a bit of stretch. Especially if it’s the same position she already has.

Told her she’d be a fool to not take it. I know a lot of people on this board having been pushing for people to move to less desirable cities so I wanted to see this in action.


You would think this is a no brainer since the jobs she gets in NOLA pay trash but this chick is about to throw away this opportunity.


Also is Buffalo a cheaper place to live than NOLA (outside taxes)?

Similar to a car purchase, you don't to wake up questioning life and being unhappy if you don't like the city you live in. Trust me on that, yeah that's a lot of change but Buffalo is rusted and disgusted, she would have to attempt to enjoy the city which compared to N.O. maybe a tall order. NYC is 6 hours away, Toronto is 2, she would probably be spending a substantial amount of time outside the city for entertainment.

hands down, you take that offer. it's over double what she is making. being from the buffalo area- niagara falls specifically, there will be plenty of things to do. it just depends on what she is into. the snow is rough but having the increase in money, she should be able to budget and save a lot of money. if she doesn't like it there grind a few years, save and move on.

i don't live up there now cause of the winters but i go home a few times a year. was just there 2 weeks ago for the bills-patriots game. everyone disses the area, but once you get here, you slowly start liking it. good food, people and buffalo gets a lot of entertainment there. concerts, shows, museums and stuff to do. during the spring summer months there is a lot of great parks, places to visit.

i'm of the mindset, anywhere you go its what you make it. if you're a boring person, you're gonna be bored anywhere you go. if you into different stuff beyond just nightlife its plenty of stuff to do.

it will be a culture shock weather wise mainly, but you adapt and elevate yourself- look at the big picture.

but i'm someone who has lived in a few different states, if someone scared to leave their comfort zone, you can't complain when you never achieve anything. everything is uncomfortable until you make it comfortable. you learn about yourself also and build resilience.

2. Family anywhere up north is another factor

3. only thing I’ll hate if i moved to Buffalo is the snow and I would have to invest in a heavy duty pickup to handle it and the New York taxes

4. Last factor, is the surrounding areas.. u have Toronto but those other areas

As sumone who lives in Buffalo yo homegirl would be foolish not to take that money. Unless shes going to stay in NO for family or sumthing. Theres a sizable population of black people here. It definitely takes sum getting use to with the winters here tho. That can be a shell shook if you've never experienced it. But sometimes you gotta not be afraid to branch out and do new things. Tell her risk it for the biscuit. And if she cute tell her to get at me. I'll show her around .

Cool stuff. What part of the city is good to live in these days? I mentioned Eggertsville which is more residential but I have been gone from Upstate for a bit so I don't know what the 'cool' part of town for young people is anymore.

This is the mentality that keeps folks broke. Nobody wants to sacrifice. If you want to get ahead you go to where the opportunity is. Especially if you are young with no kids. It's not like you have to live there forever. Do a few years, get your experience and salary bump and get out. That's what I did and that allowed me to move to the city really wanted to live. If you pass up an opportunity to double your income like that then you are fool.

No disrespect to Buffalonians, but that city is dreadful. I’ve been there maybe 50 times in my life. Was always happy to leave it.

All depends on how much your lifestyle matters to you. But one thing is for sure no one is moving to Buffalo long term. Housing in high demand cities will remain elevated for that reason. People want to move to these cities long term even if the cost of living is higher. There’s more to life than money and having a house.

We can’t sit and pretend that hurricane season isn’t just as bad as harsh winters in Buffalo. I would take the job if I was her and move close to the Canadian border to go chill in Toronto on a regular basis.

Does she know how to drive? My sister had a job over that but flew back to Brooklyn every other weekend.
