short story

My boss has always been cool with me, I can slack off and work from home whenever I want as long as the work is done. We were all in the office talking about the Grammys and he stated that he doesn't understand why Kendrick Lamar did that when no one in the u.s has chains on them anymore. That's cool because most white people have no clue

But Here's the bad part......

He said I'm glad you don't get involved in that racism nonsense and that you come to work and handle business. He had me feeling like a straight sellout. Im sitting here at work like this

That is why you don't get into discussions outside of work related stuff with people from work. When people would just stand around and talk about stuff, I would avoid it and just do my work quietly in the background. I had enough stress at work as it was, didn't need to add non-work social issues to the mix.

Type of stuff mentioned in OP is exactly why I don't. Though to be honest, you should of said something to the effect to your boss "Well just because I do my job doesn't mean that I don't think that there are race issues in the united states" or something to that effect. Its tactful while at the same time lets you feel better that your boss doesn't think you're some sort of sellout. If you just sat there quietly then you got to hold that L.

Sounds to me almost like he was testing you. Low key, trying to see where your head was at, and if you'd react to his claim that Kendrick "brought racism back."

Racism never left and we all know this. Don't buy into these imbeciles who try to engage you in a discussion you could never win, because they don't care unless it directly affects them. Which it doesn't, and never will, because they aren't black and never will be.

It's also very telling about his "compliment" towards you for being "one of the good ones." Yeah, not slick bih. Micro aggressions are very real and people expose themselves everyday with that underhanded bullshyt.

I personally would have said something along the lines of "racism isn't only expressed through slavery, but it's the most overt example we know. I've got to get back to work now, enjoy your day."
