Fact: Wooden’s famous chart was not the “Pyramid of Being a Good Person.” It was the “Pyramid of Success.” That success relied upon a fierce competitiveness that was not always grandfatherly and wise. Late in his career and life, once the mystique of the UCLA men’s basketball program was sufficiently established, Wooden could pen inspirational mottos and present himself as being above the fray in the corrupt world of sports. But several journalists have given attention to Wooden’s see-no-evil relationship with Bruins booster Sam Gilbert, and while Wooden was mostly progressive in his views on race, his attitude reflected the social mores of his time. Wooden pulled his Indiana State team out of a tournament in the 1940s because the black player on his team was not allowed to play, yet he once confronted one of his black players about dating a white woman. The famous “Wizard of Westwood” nickname actually originated as a somewhat facetious title, and was one Wooden was said to dislike.
