Are producers nowadays doing something far more complicated?
And remember, they were doing this without the convenience of technology.

hmm... kind of. everything back then was dominated by samples... and producers didn't do a lot of their own mixdowns and what not. just threw together a beat on an MP and passed it off. today, samples don't dominate, and with technology (like you mentioned) it's easier for the beat maker to mix/engineer

again im not taking anything away from the legends but overall the whole game seemed easier back then

Composing from scratch is more complicated

But at the same time the equipment being used makes it easier

You could argue either point and you wouldnt be wrong

Who is composing from scratch?
a ton of people breh

When zaytoven was creating the trap sound wit gooch, he only got a handful of tracks where he sampled and it was usually another rap track

Same wit Tyler the creator, barely does it

It's moreso because these sampled artists be wantin an arm and a leg these days and dont give a shyt that producers aren't caking like they used to

In that redbull lecture with sonny digital/metro boomin/zaytoven they said sometimes they'll just make something that sounds similar to the sample to get around it

imagine that, back in the days them dudes were getting big numbers for a quick beat :wow:
Neptune were raking in like 80k for a beat late 90s early 2000s :mjcry:

Kanye was out there tryna tax Mariah Carey for 70 racks :wow: i cant remember what beat it was thought i gotta go back and listen to the interlude when he broke it down
