It is a function of white supremacy to obfuscate itself. White people for the most part think racism is personal and a matter of bad manners and mean words.
They think "as long as I dont use the N word, I'm not racist". Meanwhile they support or dont speak out against policies and actions that harm black people and are ready with excuses when you talk about historical or current injustice. They're like programmed robots "I never owned slaves" "that was 50 yrs ago. I wasn't alive for that!" "Its not about race. He was resisting, he should've just complied!". If it's a white woman she may start crying feeling like shes being attacked.
They take race and personalize it to make it about them instead of seeing things objectively, empathetically, and rationally. This again is a function of white supremacy. There was never a moment where white people actually collectively started to discuss their own racism and how they've been cruel to others and how they can stop. They never addressed the toxicity of their culture. This is of course by design. The racism never went away, it just became socially inappropriate to express openly.
